I took some of these photos on an early visit to Goliad and the La Bahia Presidio – and the rest several years later at the huge annual event where the battle at Coleto Creek is reenacted. The entire inside of the Presidio is a campground for the reenactors, and all is lit by lantern and candle-light. I amazingly fortunate in some of the pictures, as I was on top of a hill, and taking pictures over the top of people’s heads and between tree branches.
The Palm Sunday Massacre of Colonel Fannin’s garrison, a week after their defeat at Coleto Creek kicks off Aldelsverein: The Gathering – with a teenaged Carl Becker escaping by chance, as his older brother Rudy stands between the executioner’s guns and tells him to run towards the river.
